American Music:
Last night we played at Mum’s, an establishment that proudly refers to itself as the last dive bar in Federal Hill and serves up a moonshine concoction that tastes like pumpkin pie, is made in a local woman’s bathtub, and is refered to simply as “Evil”. I think we won the place over when the bartender/promoter/sound engineer, Brian, stood in front of us yelling “You’ve made my night!” in the middle of “Don’t Think Hank Done It This Way”.
We shared the night with the band Lawnchair whose upright bass player lives next door to Andy. We waited all night for the two to duel it out on a Mingus tune. Instead, we just all sang “Long Black Veil” together.
Justin, a writer and St. John’s graduate, bought me a drink at the end of the night and gave me a great quote: “American Music is just putting together a guitar, a good story, and some people.”
I think we had all three last night. Oh yes, we also had some Sonic Youth moments.
